A municipal waste sorting system is designed to manage waste efficiently by separating recyclable, organic, and non-recyclable materials. The goal is to reduce landfill use, promote recycling, and minimize environmental impact. Systems vary, with some emphasizing source separation and others relying on centralized facilities for sorting mixed waste.

Some processing facilities may require special sorting system such as :

Edy Current Separator

An Eddy Current Separator (ECS) is a machine widely used in recycling and waste management industries to separate non-ferrous metals (such as aluminum, copper, and zinc) from non-metallic materials. It operates using magnetic forces to induce eddy currents in conductive materials, causing them to be repelled and separated from the waste stream.

How It Works

  • Magnetic Rotor : The ECS features a high-speed rotating magnetic rotor with alternating magnetic poles. When non-ferrous metal particles enter the magnetic field, eddy currents are induced within them, generating their own magnetic fields.

  • Repulsion Mechanism : The interaction between these induced magnetic fields and the rotor's magnetic field creates a repulsive force, altering the trajectory of the metal particles. This allows for their separation from non-conductive materials.

  • Conveyor System : The machine includes a conveyor belt system that transports mixed materials through the separator. Non-ferrous metals are repelled into a separate collection bin, while other materials fall off due to gravity.

Applications

Eddy Current Separators are used in :

  • Recycling facilities to recover aluminum cans, shredded metals, and electronic components.

  • Waste management to remove non-ferrous metals from plastics, glass, or municipal waste.

  • Mining operations to extract valuable metals from ore.
